A quick pre-emptive strike on issues of gender, rhetoric, class, etc. In the event that I prove persuasive enough to keep your attention in lower-case text, the piece that follows will address certain issues regarding: Roe v. Wade, Miss Cowan's commentary in last week's issue of The Beacon, American identity, cultural ethics and a whole bunch of other stuff, maybe.
The University of Portland's move to eliminate plastic water bottle sales on campus should evoke, at the very least, some response from everyone who passes through The Cove. We applaud the efforts of UP to cut back on waste and we encourage others to see this as a first step towards greater efforts in sustainability both on and off campus.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm writing this week to implore you to apply for a position on the Beacon staff for next year. Yes, we've already printed many ads, posted fliers around campus, put up notices on Facebook (become a fan if you haven't already!), ran a whole special section for Student Media jobs and had some delightful and insightful commentary from communication studies professor Mick Mulcrone and Portland Magazine editor Brian Doyle.
Water bottles … are you kidding me? This is what our University is up to? Our University could think of nothing better to do than to take away plastic water bottles? Our parents are working hard for their money to put us through school and we're going to accept this ridiculous decision? Students, stand up for your parents and stand up for yourselves.
