UP's Anime Club brings together enthusiasts with an off-beat passion

"Ushio and Tora!" "Geshiken!" "Jing: King of Bandits!" "Mai-HiME!" These aren't words someone would shout from atop a milk crate in the middle of the quad, nor or are they words strange guys would yell while sword-fighting. They're actually titles of anime series that were shown in UP's Tengokuno Anime club.

Matthew Dickman talks to The Beacon about poetry, Catholic school and the silver screen

Matthew Dickman, a well-known Portland poet, will do a reading at UP on Feb. 8 in BC 163 at 7:30 p.m. Dickman's poetry is emotionally driven and often focuses on his life growing up in Lents, a rough neighborhood in southeast Portland. Dickman and his identical twin brother Michael, also an acclaimed poet, have won numerous prizes and held a number of fellowships.

Dancing the decades away

Drama students prepare for prestigious festival

The biggest little city in the world is about to have some drama. The UP theatre department is sending roughly 40 students and faculty to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Reno, Nev. On Jan. 29, the actors in the Irene Ryan Audition/Acting Competition performed their scenes in a showcase, which allowed for the students to see each other's work and to be critiqued by faculty.

WATCH ... "The Carter" Lil Wayne. The name has become synonymous with revolutionary rap and shameless shirtlessness. Sadly, "The Carter," a documentary about the rapper, doesn't do much in the line of breaking any preconceived notions that you may have about Weezy; one of the first scenes shows Dwayne Michael Carter rummaging through a suitcase filled with everything from a wad of hundred-dollar bills to a Vitamin Water bottle containing his infamous cough syrup.
