Drum Squad, lounge receive funds

Kilts, couches, tables, chairs and drums. What do these items have in common? They will all be purchased with money from the fall semester $19,500 capital improvements fund. The ASUP Executive Board decided last week to give $3,000 to the Villa Drum Squad and $16,500 to fund furniture for the Haggerty lounge revamp.

Student trips postponed

As political unrest peaks in Honduras, the Engineers Without Borders trip to the town of Guadalupe Carney remains on hold months after it was scheduled to take place. At the same time, an on-campus conflict has delayed a similar EWB trip to Guatemala. The group of UP students who are a part of the Honduran trip were scheduled to go last August.

Nursing School awarded grants

The School of Nursing receives two federal grants to support graduate school programs

During a time when the shortage of primary care doctors has made the role of nurses more prominent, the University of Portland's School of Nursing has received two federal grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These two grants, totaling more than $700,000, are designed to support the school's nursing graduate programs at the master's and doctorate levels and prepare future nurse practitioners and primary care clinicians.

The Commons is gearing up for changes, updates to be ready next fall

Imagine walking into The Commons and seeing multiple food stations, each with its own check-out, delicious food, a fireplace and new seating. Next fall, students will be greeted with a brand new Commons and food system. On Friday, Nov. 6, the new wing of The Commons was blessed, marking the completion of part one of a two-stage revamp of The Commons.

Junior Jamie Kerr was beaming with enthusiasm as 1,500 members of the community jammed in tightly around a bonfire at Roosevelt High School's homecoming on Nov. 6. It wasn't too difficult to stay warm since every student, staff member and volunteer got a free sweatshirt at the game.

Crosswalk steps up student safety

The crosswalk lights improve safety, but only if the button is pushed

If a pedestrian is hit by a motor vehicle going 40 miles an hour, statistics show that person has an 85 percent chance of dying, according to the Department of Transportation of Oregon. UP does not want anyone taking that chance. The City of Portland, working with the University, recently installed a pedestrian activated light system on the crosswalk on Willamette Boulevard.
