ASUP designates tight budget

With a tight budget this semester, ASUP scrambled to find proper funding for clubs and organizations for next school year. "Because of the endowment, this should be the poorest semester we have," said Ben Taketa, ASUP treasurer. Due to the creation of an endowment, carryover funding was eliminated from the budget.

As the United States lies entrenched in the worst global recession in decades, the unemployment rate in America is the highest it has been in 15 years, and Americans are scrambling to find jobs, forestall foreclosure and avoid psychological duress. But maybe this global recession is not as horrible as it appears at first glance.

UP cracks down on off-campus parties, noise

With a sudden spike in the number of off-campus party and noise complaints, University of Portland Public Safety plans to escalate enforcement measures as a means to soothe the concerns of University Park residents. Starting last week, Public Safety officers now disperse student parties on the first provocation rather than hand out an initial warning.

UP participates in program to supply local and organic produce year round

With spring here, the first sugar snap peas, sweet baby carrots and earliest Oregon strawberries are just weeks away. Students and faculty sticking around campus this summer can plan on having a variety of fresh organic produce at their fingertips. This spring, for the first time, the University is participating in a Community Supported Agriculture program, an arrangement that means a whole season of fresh fruits and vegetables delivered weekly, straight from a local grower.

Friday, April 3 marked the launch of FileUP, the University's online system that allows students, faculty and staff to access their personal UP files from off campus. As finals week quickly approaches, FileUP will become a valuable resource for students to access final papers, PowerPoints and study guides from any computer.

Entrepreneur and author sets the tone for commencement ceremony

Paul Hawken, a globally known environmental business entrepreneur is speaking at the University of Portland's 2009 Commencement on May 3. Hawken, whose start in business stretches back more than 30 years when he and a colleague opened a garden tool store, has become a household name among people involved in the marriage of business and sustainability.
